Glaucoma Management
Early Detection. Lifelong Protection.
What Is Glaucoma?
Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that damage the optic nerve and can be associated with increased pressure inside the eye (intraocular pressure). This can cause irreversible loss of vision, which may go unnoticed in the early stages. As the disease progresses, it can lead to tunnel vision and, eventually, total vision loss if left untreated.
There are several types of glaucoma, including open-angle glaucoma (the most common form), angle-closure glaucoma, and normal-tension glaucoma. While the causes can vary, the outcome is similar—progressive damage to the optic nerve and a gradual loss of sight. Regular eye exams are the only reliable way to detect glaucoma early and prevent permanent vision loss.
Common Signs and Risk Factors
In the early stages, glaucoma typically presents no obvious symptoms. However, as it progresses, you may experience gradual vision loss, difficulty with night vision, or a narrowing of your visual field. Sudden eye pain, headaches, and blurred vision can also occur in rarer forms like angle-closure glaucoma.
People over the age of 40, those with a family history of glaucoma, individuals with diabetes, or people of African or Asian descent are at higher risk. If you fall into any of these categories—or haven’t had an eye test in a while—it’s wise to schedule a comprehensive eye exam with our team. You can easily book your appointment online.

1. How We Diagnose and Manage Glaucoma
We use a combination of tests including intraocular pressure measurement, optic nerve imaging, and visual field testing to accurately assess your risk and detect any early signs of glaucoma. More about these technologies on our visual field testing and retinal imaging pages.
If you’re diagnosed with glaucoma, we’ll work with you to develop a tailored management plan. This may involve regular monitoring and collaboration with an ophthalmologist for treatment such as prescription eye drops or surgical referrals when necessary. With the right care, many people with glaucoma can maintain stable vision for life.
2. Ongoing Monitoring and Support Approach
Glaucoma is a chronic condition that requires lifelong management. Our optometrists will schedule regular follow-ups to track any changes in your eye pressure, optic nerve health, and visual field. These appointments are crucial for adjusting treatment if needed and ensuring that the condition remains under control.
We’re committed to educating our patients about glaucoma and empowering you to take charge of your eye health. Our approachable team is always here to answer questions, explain results, and provide the ongoing care you deserve.
