Macular Degeneration
Expert Diagnosis & Ongoing Management
What is Macular Degeneration?
Macular degeneration, also known as age-related macular degeneration (AMD), is a progressive eye disease that affects the macula—the central part of the retina responsible for sharp, detailed vision. When the macula deteriorates, it can result in blurring or dark patches in the centre of your vision, making activities like reading, driving, and recognising faces more difficult.
There are two main forms of AMD: dry AMD, which progresses slowly and is more common, and wet AMD, which can lead to sudden vision loss due to abnormal blood vessel growth. While there is currently no cure, early diagnosis and treatment can slow the progression and help protect your vision both in the short & long term.
Symptoms of Macular Degeneration
-
Straight lines may appear wavy or out of shape, making it difficult to read or focus on fine details.
-
Tasks like reading small print, threading a needle, or recognising facial features can become increasingly challenging.
-
You may notice a dark or empty area in the centre of your sight, which can gradually expand as the condition progresses.
Advanced Screening and Ongoing Monitoring
At The Eye Care Spot, we use diagnostic tools such as retinal imaging to examine the macula and detect early signs of AMD, even before symptoms appear.
If macular degeneration is diagnosed, we develop a customised management plan that may include nutritional advice, lifestyle changes, protective eyewear and referrals to ophthalmologists for further treatment, such as anti-VEGF injections in cases of wet AMD.

Lifestyle and Prevention Tips
While age is the greatest risk factor, lifestyle choices can significantly influence the progression of AMD. A healthy diet rich in leafy greens and omega-3 fatty acids, regular exercise, not smoking, and protecting your eyes from UV light are all important preventative measures. Maintaining regular eye exams also ensures any changes are caught early, giving you the best chance of preserving your sight. If you’re living with AMD or are at risk, our optometrists will work closely with you to provide long-term support and guidance tailored to your needs.
